Vermicomposting in the cold-climate apartment - Paper Composting

This year’s Carry-In-Carry-Out (CICO) project is to vermicompost the paper that arrives in my apartment.

I produce bales of cross-cut shredded paper and would like a food-scraps-free method of reducing this paper.

Paper is now my biggest concern in terms of waste.

Cathy Nesbitt says “add nitrogen”, so I’ve explored web sites and discovered:

http://www.compostguide.com/

This site lists as nitrogen sources:

Algae, seaweed and lake moss

Bird droppings

Coffee ground and filters

Diseased plants

Hair

Manure (horse, cow, pig, sheep, goat, chicken, rabbit)

Weeds

Sod

http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/homecompost/materials.html

This site lists

Blood meal

Bone meal

Coffee grounds

Feathers

Fruit

Fruit peels and rinds

Grass clippings, fresh

Vegetable scraps

Hair

Pumpkins

Lake weeds

Manure

Tea grounds and leaves

Lint

http://www.cast.ilstu.edu/ksmick/Compost/brochures/quickguide/comppam.html

This site lists

 Livestock manure

Grass

Food waste

Summary

Of all the nitrogen sources I can find (to Saturday, April 08, 2006) the ones that appear to me to be non-food (in the sense of non-insect/vermin attractors) are:

Algae, seaweed and lake moss

Bird droppings

Blood meal

Bone meal

Coffee grounds

Diseased plants

Feathers

Grass

Grass clippings, fresh

Hair

Lake weeds

Lint

Livestock manure

Pumpkins

Sod

Tea grounds and leaves

Weeds

Of these, the ones I am likely to obtain where I live are:

Item

Source

Bird droppings

Pigeons on Balcony

Coffee grounds

Kitchen, coffee shop

Diseased plants

Apartment

Grass clippings, fresh

Friend’s lawn

Hair

Vacumn cleaner

Lint

Vacumn cleaner

Tea grounds and leaves

Kitchen

The one item not listed is human urine, which is, I understand, rich in nitrogen and easy to harvest from a male human.
